Luigi explains: Unique Pro Bibs

Q36.5 founder Luigi Bergamo explains how he achieved the futuristic comfort and stability of our most technologically advanced bib shorts.

The origins

“When I started first developing the Unique bib shorts my goal was to transfer the two technologies which we have pioneered over the last ten years for bib shorts to seamless construction: the use of stretch woven fabrics and advanced body-mapping. I was sure that if I was able to achieve this I would be able to achieve the maximum expression of our signature feeling…”

The feeling

“Riding with the Unique bib shorts you have what I call an “invisible angel”. By this I mean that when they are on they achieve a naked fit, your movement doesn’t feel restricted at all and you almost feel like they are not there but at the same time they are technically extremely supportive, keeping your muscle fibers aligned and giving you a better control of your movement. Your cycling angel is present, helping you, but without getting in the way!”

The new chamois pad

“For this second-generation Unique we created an entirely new chamois pad to achieve perfect synergy with the specific characteristics of the Unique. The new chamois pad has a kind of “wishbone” construction with the chamois pad separated into two different parts of almost equal density, joined together only at the front. One part remains attached to your groin, one to the saddle, in this way when you always have maximum padding (and control) no matter what angle you sit on the saddle at. Even the foams of the two parts are different not just in density but also cell structure, to better conform to your personal anatomy. Riders have told me they feel glued to the saddle with this new chamois pad, as though they have even more control of the bike.”

“A surprise”

“The final result of this original technological ambition and the new chamois pad was really a surprise. I feel like we reached a 100% score. 5 stars for the supportiveness and 5 stars for the chamois pad. I couldn’t imagine a better performance score when I started. I personally cannot take these bib shorts off any more (unless I’m testing something new…). They are extremely supportive and ergogenic but unlike some of my earlier very ergogenic products like the L1 they give a “naked” feeling, so you feel totally unrestricted… supported but free!”

A little lesson

“One lesson I learned from this new generation of the Unique was that there is no such thing just as a good chamois pad. There is only the right chamois pad for the right bib short. On the basis of this learning we revisited all our existing bib shorts and chamois pads, finetuning them.”
