The Big Interview:
Matteo Moschetti

With four wins in 2025, Matteo Moschetti is chasing his first Giro stage. We sat down to talk sprints, rivals, and his new Q36.5 shoes.

Matteo Moschetti is not the kind of sprinter who carries the aggression needed in the last kilometre off the bike. In fact as he himself says, if you were to meet him for a coffee one morning you’d be hard pressed to imagine that the relaxed, courteous young man in front of you spends his days hurtling into gaps between riders and the barriers at 80km/h… but this hasn’t stopped him from being one of the most successful sprinters in the peloton in 2025. And with 4 victories already to his name this season he has the right to believe that his debut Giro d’Italia victory may finally be within reach this year! We sat down to him about sprinting without a leadout train, his biggest rivals, his special new Q36.5 shoes and the pressure to win his first Giro stage…

On his biggest rivals at the Giro

I always start from the idea that you have to respect everybody but fear nobody. It’s the Giro and every riders is there to win and is ready to do anything to achieve that goal so the competition will be fierce. But if I look at my results this year I think its fair for me to think I can get a good result.

On sprinting without a leadout train

It’s a form of gambling… If you have a train you can make decisions, make calls to your teammates; go right, go left, brake, accelerate… Without a train you really just have to take a bit of a gamble and choose a wheel to follow. To win this way you have to cultivate a kind of sixth sense of adaptation. You need be flexible. You need to be sharp and make quick decisions. Have 360° vision. The ability to jump from one wheel to another.

On winning the fastest sprint in cycling history

The win at Alula was an example of a series of good choices and good positioning all coming together. Afterwards they said it was the fastest last kilometre in cycling history but right there and then I was just concentrated on avoiding other riders, holding the best wheel, just the moment to launch the sprint… I was so concentrated I didn’t even realize how fast we’d done it though the stage was a circuit so we’d already gone past the finish line once before and had a little “antipasto” of how fast it was thanks to the strong tailwind, wide road with no obstacles and a slight downhill for the first 500m…

On his special new shoes

As a sprinter something I really appreciate is feeling a direct as possible contact with the pedal and I know this is something Luigi [Bergamo, Q36.5 founder] has been working on with the new Unique shoe, getting the sole thinner and thinner… and I can only say the final product is an incredible step forward. I have never had such a feeling of direct feeling of power transfer. And what is amazing to me is that the shoe, despite the huge increase in power transfer, still manages to maintain the “sock feel” of the previous Unique shoe. I love tightening the Boas as much as possible and having that feel of being total locked in, with every watt of power going straight into the pedal…

On the pressure to win his first Grand Tour stage

I’ve done the Giro two times and I’ve had a few top 5 and top 10 results but I’ve never been on the podium. I don’t really feel a lot of pressure but it seems legitimate to go to the Guro with the motivation to win this time because I’ve had a very good season so far.

On how he’d describe his sprinting style

In one word: powerful. I think off the bike I’m a pretty relaxed, normal person. But on the bike in the final kilometre when I have a goal I am able to transform myself and pull out all my grit and other characteristics which you met me at the bar you’d never suspect I had in me.
