Xabier Mikel Azparren
The Wingman

Cycling is that unique sport where only one rider stands on the top step of the podium but needs an entire team by his side to make it to that point. Today we introduce one of the riders behind and next to Tom Pidcock in all his major races.

Basque rider Xabier Mikel Azparren is the so-called wingman, or domestique. He does his job in the early hours of the race, away from the cameras and media attention, but is absolutely instrumental to the results Tom Pidcock achieves for the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team.

“My job on the team last year was very different,” Xabier Mikel starts. “I went in breakaways trying to achieve results from the break. Sadly 2024 was also a year with two major injuries: a broken left shoulder and a broken right collarbone. It was hard to get that best feeling again to go for success, so I helped other riders in doing sprint lead-outs for example.”

Xabier Mikel was born in San Sebastián 26 years ago. His heroes in cycling were riders like Imanol Erviti, Jonathan Castroviejo and Omar Fraile – riders who often sacrificed their own chances to make sure their team leader had the best opportunity to shine.

“Helping others is something I always liked doing, on and off the bike,” Xabier Mikel continues. “I respected riders like Imanol a lot because in cycling you need strong riders like him on your team. Alejandro Valverde needed Imanol’s strength to achieve the great results he did. Growing up watching these riders was the first bit of motivation to also become a key domestique.”

When it was announced that Tom Pidcock would join the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team from 2025 Xabier Mikel knew there was a job he would like to do: be Tom’s wingman.

“I first met Tom at the Vuelta a España route presentation in December where I sat next to him, translating from Spanish what was said,” he recalls. “I think we had a good connection straight away. He is a big star in cycling but also easy to talk with. I am also quite open and easy, so we immediately had a nice chat where he was also interested in who I am.”

They started the season together in AlUla Tour where Tom won two stages and the general classification. From that moment on Xabier Mikel knew for certain what his job would be this season.

“A good wingman has to be able to sacrifice everything in training, but he knows his chances of winning are very low. You do all the hard work to make your sure your teammate, your leader, gets the chances. It’s not only the power I bring on the bike but also a calm mindset and good vibes around the races. I try to be myself, be relaxed and have a laid-back approach to life. I always try to be helpful and contribute to a good atmosphere at the dinner table because those moments contribute to everyone being happy. I think having that perspective on life makes you an enjoyable person to be around.”

The fact that Xabier Mikel might not crack a result for himself in races where he is Tom’s wingman, doesn’t mean there isn’t pressure on him like there is on Tom having to get results.

“It’s not the same pressure to win that he experiences but there is pressure on me to follow the race plan, to do my job right there and then. My work is important to reach the team’s objectives, from kilometre one, to deep into the final or even all the way the finish line. It’s a hard physical job to fight for positions. If I choose the wrong place in the peloton, the mistake is mine. I do my job the best possible way to avoid mistakes affecting our results.”

Communication is very important for a team leader and his wingman. Xabier Mikel knows exactly what Tom needs from him in race situations. Milan-Sanremo is a good example. The race was a big objective for the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team in general and Tom personally. It’s the longest race on the calendar where nothing really happens in the first hours until the peloton reaches Capo Berta and Capo Mele. It doesn’t mean Xabier Mikel had an easy day though.

“Those first hours are not very interesting, but I have to be focused nonetheless in case something does happen. I stayed close to Tom in those hours, taking his clothes back to the car or bringing him back to the peloton after a nature break. Then when the hot points come with the Capi you fight for position with all the other teams. That is a hard physical battle,” he explains.

“Tom is a real organic leader and it’s clear he loves this sport. I don’t ask too much but he has already made me a better rider in those four months together. The way he trains and eats pushes me to get to a higher level too. I learn every day. In a race like Milan-Sanremo he taught me to calm down a little. I spent quite a lot of energy and then he taught me to let others do the work as well.”

Milan-Sanremo didn’t work out how the team and Tom Pidcock himself would have liked. Xabier Mikel and his teammates contributed to getting Tom in the best position before the Cipressa where he sadly was involved in a crash at the exact moment the race exploded. It eliminated his chances for a good result.

“This was the first time in a race I did with Tom that it didn’t work out. When I rode back to the bus I had a strange feeling. I talked with Emils and we were unsure how Tom would react. He surprised me when he hugged me straight away and thanked me for the job I did. Despite his own disappointment he took the weight of disappointment completely off our shoulders. I didn’t really agree with that because if I get to be part of his success, he must also make me feel partly responsible for when it goes wrong,” he says.

“He also was there for me when I crashed in Tirreno Adriatico. I was disappointed but Tom encouraged me that I would come back stronger. He cared more about me as a person than for me as a rider at that point. We are a team so we should always share the successes but also the hard moments.”

The first months as a wingman to Tom Pidcock have made Xabier Mikel proud of his job. They won stages in AlUla Tour together and rode to podium places in Strade Bianche and Tirreno Adriatico. Now they start three major Classics together: Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

“Tom does everything he does as a leader quite naturally. It’s his second nature to lead both on and off the bike. He is here to win races, and you need big balls to do that, but you also need the qualities to encourage your teammates and make them feel part of your success. He does that really well and in a very pleasant manner.”

“I am really enjoying my job at the moment,” Xabier Mikel concludes. “We are the same age and get along really well. To get these opportunities to race alongside him and to see him do his job every day is an opportunity of a lifetime. He shows me every day that I make a difference and that’s a great feeling to have.”

“Cycling is a team sport but only one rider gets to step onto that podium. It’s then up to the rider whether he makes his own win a team win. Tom always makes it a team win. To thank him for what I learned from him and the times we spent together, I will invite him to San Sebastián after the season for a traditional Basque cider and a really big steak.”
