LOCAL CONDITIONS: Brennan Wertz

Brennan Wertz cuts an unmistakable figure in the Bay Area cycling community, be it for his imposing figure, his ex-USA National Gravel Champions bands, awesome power (it’s not a coincidence that he is one of SRM’s preferred testers) or general connoisseurial approach to cycling performance equipment (working at Above Category will do that to you…). This Summer he met up with out fast and notorious Bay Area locals Anthony Little and Skyler Taylor (as well as New York interloper VeloTom, but more on that later…) to take us on the most quintessential Bay Area ride imaginable…

1.What is your favourite Bay Area climb and why?

My favorite Bay Area climb would have to be Mount Tamalpais. There are many ways to climb up to the top of the mountain that sits above my hometown and where I spend so much time training, but my favorite way up is the climb from Bolinas up BoFax Rd. and Seven Sisters. This is a truly magnificent climb with beautiful views in every direction.

3.Describe a perfect Bay Area summer ride? How many hours? What climbs? How much Gravel? What width tyres? Where do you stop to eat and what do you order? Ideal temperature range? In a group or alone? If in a group who are you riding with?

My ideal summer ride would be out to the Pt Reyes Lighthouse via Marshall Wall. On the way back home, I would add in the Mt Vision climb and subsequent singletrack descent. I would ideally be on my Scott Addict with 35mm tires for speed on the paved sections but a bit more grip for the occasional dirt sections. This would be about 6-7 hours and I would stop in Pt Reyes Station for a mid-ride snack and to refill the bottles. This loop includes many of my favorite local roads and trails and would take me through many different microclimates. I would probably do this ride with my main training buddies, Bradyn Lange, Skyler Taylor, Anthony Palicci, and Jovanni Stefani all of whom would be eager to push the pace all day, both on the climbs and the descents.

4.How wide is the temperature range on a usual long Bay Area summer ride? Does this make choosing kit more difficult?

The temperature in the summer here in the Bay Area is notoriously challenging. I can start a ride in the morning in a cool, damp fog, rolling out on wet roads, only to climb up a few hundred meters and pop out into warm sunshine and a hot breeze. It’s a bizarre climate here and dressing properly is often a challenge. Fortunately, I have kit that takes these big temperature variations in stride, but there are certainly still times where I stay out later than planned and a wall of fog rolls in late in the afternoon and I finish the last hour of the ride wishing I had packed one more layer.

5.What is the most essential performance characteristic that bib shorts, jersey, vest and shoes need to have on an epic Bay Area summer ride?

The most essential performance characteristic of my technical equipment is the breathability. With such large swings in temperature, staying dry is the key to retaining warmth in the foggy, cooler sections and remaining cool once above the fog and back into the blazing California sun.

6.Base layer or no base layer?

I always wear a base layer. The Base Layer 0 is my favorite and the one I wear the most. It’s just always been part of my routine and I love how the different base layers wick moisture and keep me either cool or warm depending on the conditions thanks to the breathability and moisture wicking properties of the materials.

7.When did you first try a Q36.5 garment? Do you remember if it felt very different to anything you had used in the past?

I first tried a Q36.5 garment back in 2021 on my first day working at Above Category. Chad, the owner and founder of the shop, generously gave me an AC custom Gregarius Jersey and pair of Dottore Bib Shorts. I was truly blown away by the quality, comfort, and technical nature of the materials used. I had worn a lot of high-performance clothing before this point, as both a bike racer and an elite rower with the U.S. National Team. This was unlike anything I had worn before. It is now more than five years since that first ride in Q36.5 and I haven’t worn anything else since.

8.Favourite ever Q36.5 garment?

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite Q36.5 garment, but if I had to pick just one, I would go for an item that is likley often overlooked but makes a huge difference when it works well. The Q36.5 Overshoes are my favorite garments. They are warm and do their job incredibly well, but they also look sleek and last way longer than any other shoe covers I have ever worn. I still have my first pair of Hybrid Overshoes I got from Chad at AC back in 2021 and I still wear them often. It’s the smaller, often overlooked garments and details like this that really set Q36.5 apart from other brands in my opinion.

9.Current favourite Q36.5 garment?

This time of year, I spend a lot of time wearing the Dottore Hybrid Que Long Sleeve Jersey. I am a big fan of this jersey, especially this time of year in California because the start of the ride can be quite cold, but then it warms up a lot later in the day. I am always impressed by how well this jersey handles these large temperature swings and keeps me comfortable to continue with my efforts and training, regardless of the temperature or time of day.

10.What is the characteristic you must appreciate about Q36.5 garments in general?

The characteristic of Q36.5 garments I appreciate the most if the technicality of them. Sure, they look great and have a clean design, but at the end of the day I am a professional cyclist whose job it is to train hard every day and ultimately win races. I view my clothing the same way I view my bike and the other equipment I use: these items are all tools that help me do my job and I want the best equipment possible. A big part of my job is being comfortable and safe on the bike so I can get the most out of myself in training and recovery. By using the high-tech garments from Q36.5, I am able to train better, which ultimately leads to better results down the road.

The Silver yarn found in the leg panels reduces the negative impact of naturally occurring electric charges produced by the body during exercise as well as boosting the blood flow and increases oxygen supply to cells.
