Tour de France advice with road captain Damien Howson

Damien Howson is the most experienced Grand Tour rider of Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling’s Tour de France team. With 12 grand tours already to his name, including important domestique roles in the victory of Simon Yates at the 2018 Vuelta, Tom Pidcock’s 3rd place in 2025 and Esteban Chavez’s podium at the Giro d’Italia in 2017, Howson has tasted success at every grand tour with the exception of the Tour de France. His personal plan since discovering Pinarello – Q36.5’s participation late last year: to correct the record once and for all.

So Damien, 12 Grand Tours, some team victories, some DNFs, many weeks of hopes and despair… what’s the most important lesson you’ve learned over the years on how to approach a Grand Tour?

It’s the obvious one but the most important lesson: that Grand Tours are long and conserving both mental and physical energy expenditure in every way possible adds up over 3 weeks. Also: the perception that once you’re tired its only downhill is false; the body has a funny way of recovering and one bad day doesn’t mean the rest of the tour is pointless, things can turn around pretty quickly, just as quickly as they got bad, in fact.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made over these last 13 years?

The biggest evolution in the sport since I started is nutrition. It’s much more dialed in now. I remember in earlier Grand Tours I was, in retrospect, heavily underfueling. I can remember at least 3-4 days where I ran out of energy before completing my objective and I think that was pretty common in the peloton. But now it’s no secret how it works and we’re really focused on this aspect and also know that for example a deficit one day might not even be noticed that day but will be in the days following. So nutrition is definitely an important listen, but also keeping a positive mindset.

In these first few minutes you’ve already twice mentioned the mental aspect of grand tours, could you explain in a bit more detail?

Yeah, so finding moments throughout the day to make the most of the little downtime you have over the 3 weeks is really important, whether it’s a call with family, reading a book, listening to music or playing a mindless game on your phone, you need to find ways to relax. I was also taught early in my career that grabbing a 1 hour nap each day for 21 days adds up to a whole extra day of sleep compared to somebody who’s not doing it. So everything adds up and everything is compressed in a grand tour. You’re switched on for so much of the day from the race itself, to recovery, press requirements, eating, massage, ice baths. It’s all part of the job and requires concentration and takes it toll…

Following up on that, what advice would you give to a young rider going to the Tour for the first time?

Well grand tours are already their own beast but the tour is a step above the other, with all the other commitments, the tension, press, more opinions, more fans on the side of the road… everything is just heightened and it can be quite overwhelming at times… When I was at my first grand tour people told me ‘treat it like any other race’. And though I think that’s impossible that’s still my advice. Follow your normal routines, Remember that you’ve been chosen for the race by your team for a reason and that reason is what you’ve shown at other races so try to do what you normally do at races.

You told me that ever since you found out that Pinarello Q36.5 would be invited to the Tour in 2026 you knew this was your major objective for the year. Can you explain why you wanted to come back so much?

Over my career and over the 12 grand tours I’ve raced I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of teams that have had a large amount of success, whether it was winning with Yates in 2018, Chavez’s second in 2017 and Tom [Pidcock’s] podium last year at the Vuelta, but I’ve been to the Tour twice and though the first first we had some success, for example winning the white jersey with Yates the first time, it wasn’t somehow a result that highlighted how special the experience of riding the tour was, the second time was one of those grand tours where nothing really went to plan with GC not eventuating, chasing stages for two weeks and finally crashing out on stage 16… so I felt that, having had success at other tours, I really wanted to go back one more time before the end of my career and enjoy the environment, feel adrenaline again and hopefully taste the success I haven’t yet had whether it’s a stage for the team or a high GC result. So yeah, unfinished business.

What’s your personal ambition?

Just to enjoy racing a the world’s biggest stage race one last time. I broke my collarbone 9 weeks ago and there were moments where I didn’t think it would happen. So I’m just happy to be here and ready to enjoy it. And yeah, unfinished business…

What’s the most essential thing you pack in your suitcase?

Honestly, I take the same things to every race I go to. That’s just part of what I said before of treating the Tour the same way you’d treat every race. But if there is one thing that’s really important it’s the pillow. You’re sleeping in 21 different beds over 21 nights so having something familiar is important. And things that help you relax during downtime, so the Ipad to watch a movie and a good pair of headphones.

What’s your best “dress like a pro” trick or piece of advice?

Simply to always be prepared, especially at the tour where on Alpine stages you start that it’s 35°C on the road and by the third climb of the day you’re riding in torrential rain and its 20°C cooler. So for me that means that when I get to the hotel in Barcelona, I’ll go through my rain bags thoroughly and make sure everything is where it should be, that I’ve tried every jacket to make sure it fits. Another thing I do is that I’ll race in the same skinsuit every day until the rest day and then on the rest day I’ll change to a new one for the next week as well pulling out new socks etc. I find it really helps psychologically on rest days to take stock of the situation and have a fresh start for the next week. That said I’m really just looking forward to putting on the new kit and the special new shoes that Luigi has prepared for me and racing in them for the first time.
